INTRODUCTION TO BOTOX

Cosmetic Injections

The Background

Similar to other parts of our body (as time passes), our skin shows signs of aging. Overexposure to the sun and occupational/recreational activities may harm our skin over time and lead to the development of wrinkles, dryness, sagging, and skin spots. Smoking and genetics are also important factors in how your skin ages.

The Issue

The early appearance of wrinkles, or their worsening with time, happens for most people going through the aging process. Certain areas on your skin may make you look older or simply more tired. Although it is important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise to achieve a healthy body and reduce the impact of aging, taking care of our physical appearance is important as well.

The Solution

Looking for Botox in Mississauga, Brampton  or the Greater Toronto Area to address your skin concerns? You’ve come to the right place. Whether its facial wrinkles or restoring your youthfulness, Botox will help enhance your physical appearance, and in turn, boost your confidence as you step out into the world.

FAQs

What is Botox?

Botox and other neuromodulators are injectable products that have been ‘Health Canada approved’ for cosmetic use since 2002. Its most common use is for reducing appearance of wrinkles and unwanted lines on your skin. The active ingredient in Botox is a purified protein trusted by the medical community to temporarily block nerve signals, preventing excessive muscle movements which cause wrinkles to show.  Botox is most commonly used to treat the forehead, vertical lines (angry 11’s) and the lines around the eyes, or crow’s feet.

What should I expect after my Botox treatment?

After your Botox treatment, you can expect to see visible smoothing of wrinkles and frown lines starting to soften within 4-5 days, with full results appearing in 2 weeks. The effects of Botox can last up to four months, and vary from person to person. It’s important to note that Botox is not a permanent solution. If you discontinue treatment, your frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines will gradually return.

Where else can Neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport, Nuceiva, Xeomin) be used?

Neuromodulators including Botox, Dysport, Nuceiva and Xeomin can be used in a variety of other areas including nose lines, bunny lines, chin dimples, a downturned smile, jawline, neck bands, horizontal lines on the neck, lip lines, lip flips, sweaty palms, feet, underarms, and the nose area (for nostril-flaring and tip droop) to name a few!

What causes facial lines and wrinkles?

Facial lines are caused by a combination of factors, including a reduction of collagen, damage caused by free radicals from the sun and environment, and genetic factors. Repeated muscle contractions from squinting, raising your eyebrows, and frowning also cause the skin to furrow and fold, resulting in the formation of facial lines. Botox works beneath the surface of the skin by temporarily reducing the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet, resulting in visibly smoother-looking areas.

Post-Care Instructions
for Botox

  • Wait for 24 hours before resuming exercise, especially if it’s part of your daily routine. Your doctor may suggest waiting longer as physical activity can increase blood flow, which could spread the toxin and reduce its effectiveness at the injection site.

  • Performing facial exercises like frowning, smiling, and raising your eyebrows is safe and can actually help the effects of Botox appear sooner.

  • Avoid applying makeup on your skin for at least 24 hours after Botox treatment to prevent the potential dispersal of the toxin caused by rubbing.

  • Sit upright and avoid bending or lying down for the first 4 hours after receiving Botox to minimize the spreading of the toxin and maintain its effectiveness at the injection site.

  • Consult your doctor about medications that may increase your risk of bruising and when it is safe to resume taking them.
  • Avoid touching, rubbing, or applying pressure on the treated area and maintain a normal heart rate to allow the Botox to settle into the muscles properly.

  • Refrain from consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours after Botox treatment, as it can increase the risk of bruising.

  • Avoid skin treatments like facial massages, exfoliating scrubs, and dermal fillers for the first 24 hours as they may also reduce the effectiveness of the Botox.

  • Steer clear of sun exposure for at least 4 hours after treatment as it can cause flushing and increase blood pressure due to heat. For added caution, avoid the sun for 24 to 48 hours.

  • Try to avoid sleeping on the areas where Botox was injected to minimize physical pressure and help the toxin settle into the muscles.
